Bees

IMG_0404 We had been keeping bees with a half dozen colonies for a few years before we moved up island and bought the property now called Rozehaven. We currently have hive stands on the back lot that can accommodate 34 full size colonies, or up to 68 nucs, or some combination of the two. Exactly how many colonies we have at any given point in time is always a number flux. The medium term goal is to continue expanding by carving nucleus colonies from our existing stock, and raising our own queens to head up the new colonies as they are created. Expansion of the efforts with bees is, and will continue to be a work in progress as we work down the 5 year plan. For the first few years, the division of work is fairly strait forward, half of the colonies will be dedicated to providing stock for expansion, and half will be used to produce honey for sale.
